Resources on Web Design

Take most recommendations on this page with a grain of salt. Most design rules can (and should) be broken at times. Whenever possible, I err on the side of simplicity and clarity. To me, good web design means prioritizing the content (almost always the text) and making it as accessible as possible. Any visual elements that do not tangibly benefit the reader are wasted space at best, and actively harmful at worst.
Writings
- Every Layout - Heydon Pickering & Andy Bell
- I have not read this, but I have heard good things and I am considering purchasing it.
- Modern CSS patterns in Campfire - Jason Zimdars
- Piccalilli
- I have not taken any of the courses offered on this site, but I enjoy the site’s design and the free content enough to list it here.
- Practical Typography - Matthew Butterick
- Tons of great advice. Even taking just a few suggestions from this book will improve your designs significantly.
- Also has good advice on typography and general styling for more formal documents (e.g. business cards, papers, and résumés).
- Visual design rules you can safely follow every time - Anthony Hobday
- Very solid advice. I have internalized most of it by now, but I occasionally come back to re-establish my core principles.
